Warroora Station - WA's hidden gem!

After heading south for an hour and filling up with fuel, costing $196, we again turned west and headed back out to the coast, destination Warroora Station. It was quite desolate driving in, past lots of low lying, scrubby bracken type vegetation, with not even any small trees. We unlocked the station gate and headed up to the old cattle shed to check in.

Once set up we decided we needed some exercise, so we choose to walk to ‘The Shack’, the private beach attached to the station, approximately 1.5km away. We were blown away by the stunning, rugged beauty of the coastline and the amazing sand dunes behind the beach. We hadn’t seen sand dunes like these since we were small children growing up in the Shire, where we rode the sandhills of Kurnell on pieces of cardboard!

It was such a beautiful afternoon on the beach (with no wind) so we headed north, hoping that we would be able to see the track back to the station from the top of one of the dunes. Alas no – so we kept walking around the point (another few km’s) till we finally saw some people in the distance (thank heavens as I was starting to think we might be lost along the coastline …). We headed cross country and finally hit the dirt road. Soon enough a 4WD came along and confirmed that we were heading in the right direction. Three hours after we had headed off, and 10km’s later, we made it back to our campsite. The hot, artesian bore water shower was very welcome that evening.

The next day we packed a picnic lunch, lowered the tyres on the 4WD and headed north along the beach track to Pelican Point, a distance of 12km’s. We gathered the Cool Cabana, backpacks with food, water and snorkelling gear and walked about 1km down the beach. The sand and water were stunningly beautiful! Turquoise blue ocean, powder soft, white sand and no one about!!! Heaven! We set up the beach shade and spent 3 hours in paradise. We did duck into the water a few times to cool off, staying very close to the shoreline. We had seen a 1m shark swim by earlier and there were several small manta rays close to the edge – so we weren’t too keen to venture past knee deep – each one keeping an eye out while the other one got wet…. that suited us.

We ended a magic day by stopping off at Steven’s Beach on the way back to the station to watch the sun dip into the Indian Ocean – you just can’t get enough of these beautiful WA sunsets!
